The text of this short choral work, the first line of which might be translated as 'Be thou unto me a God, a protector, and a place of refuge', is taken from the Gradual for the Eighth Sunday after Pentecost. It is characterised by the use of dense but consonant harmony, set against a soaring melodic line, and incorporating some unexpected expressive shifts.
